Toshiba NB200-10p - DISSECTED :D

As I could not find any info on how to open up the NB200,
I had to make my own way in, and it took quite some time to get there.
I thought it would be nice to film the assembly, and describe the disassembly
step by step, so some of you netbook modders could have it more easy ;)

Didn't have the camera for the disassembling, so here's the assembly video.
If you're taking it apart, just do the opposite procedure ;)

I'll describe the whole process step by step, as it's not all that simple.
It's the most complicated netbook I've seen ;)

First of course unplug it from the mains, and remove the battery.
Put it bottom side up, and then unscrew and remove the memory bay hatch.
Then do the HDD hatch, for which you will need a Torx T7 bit.
You wont get any further then this if you don't have a T7 bit.
Then unscrew the two Torx screws, and remove the hatch.
It will give you access to the HDD and both miniPCI modules.
On mine there is only the WiFi in place, and the second one doesn't have the miniPCI connector soldered ;-(
So no easy mods for me ;)
If You are lucky to have the second miniPCI connector, you could just buy the 3Gmodem
(or whatever you would like to install) and just plug it in and rig up the antenna.
or just ditch the WiFi and replace it with 3G.
Well, that's the EASY way.
Here's the hard way continued ;)

After you remove the HDD (just slide it out of the SATA connector, and pull out holding it to the sides)
unscrew 7 screws marked as F6, and two marked as F4 (they are shorter then F6, don't mix them, and remember where they go)
Once all 9 screws are gone, undo the 3 unmarked short ones(same length as F4's)
found in the battery bay, which hold the oval cover which contains the power button.
Undo the 3 plastic clips that hold it, and then turn the NB around (bottom down)
and remove that part.

Then open the screen and start removing the keyboard.
Release the keyboard form the 4 metal clips that you will find on the sides,
with something thin, a small flat head screw driver for example.
Clips and keyboard base are painted metal, so don't scratch the paint.
The lift the keyboard with top part first, and remember that you have to release
the film cable connection before you completely remove it.
DON'T use force, the film cable will easily get out once the socket is open.
Same goes for every other connector, if you haven't done this sort of thing before.

Once the keyboard is tucked away, disconnect all the connectors you see.
If i'm not forgetting something, they should be: screen, bluetooth, touchpad(film),power button(film), camera and microphone.
AND WiFi antenna cables, acesable from the bottom via HDD hatch.
Then unscrew 4 screws which hold the screen hinges. For the outer ones you will have to close the screen.
Once undone, remove the screen part, making sure that you did not forget to disconnect any cables which go into the screen lid.

Continue with 4 screws on the top part of the body, marked with F6
Start separating two halves using finger nails, or a plastic card (credit card will do)
Clips are few, and not as strong, so minimum force is required to split it apart.
Once removed, the top side of the mother board will greet you ;)
To get the the bottom side, disconnect the speaker cable (just near the speaker)
and undo two screws in top left and bottom right corners, marked with a white arrow.
Then lift the mother board from the right side first, so mic and headphone sockets can escape the housing,
and then get the board flat again, and push upwards on the corner next to the VGA out socket,
so it can get out.
And there you have it! Finally the NB's mother board in your hands :D

Once you start assembling, be sure you don't have any extra parts at the end ;)
and be sure you connect all the cables back.
I've lost the memory hatch screw somewhere ! LOL

BTW, you can find few shots of the mb along with some comparison shots with the Samsung NC10 here:

  • Hi, I don´t understand how can I upgrade de Memory to 2GB, you said that it is just with the bottom, but which one...? in the back i just found 1 slot and it is occuped for the first memory. there is another slot?. please help me... i dont find information about this. thank you... sorry for my english i´m learning it

  • Sure, no problem :)

Yes, you are correct - as on most netbooks there is only ONE memory slot.(which has your 1GB memory now)

So in order to upgrade to 2GB, you have to buy a single 2GB memory, and then replace that with the 1GB already found inside the computer.

    Hope this helps :)

  • So using Torx 7 screwdriver to access the hard drive and upgrade it would void warranty?

  • No, I don't think so. The only warranty seal that I've noticed was on one of the other screws that hold two halves together.

HDD (wifi and wwan under it too) cover did not have any seals, or anything.

But of course, that was on my NB, and I did not really read the small print on the warranty card, so I don't really know what the warranty authorities would have to say about hdd cover opening.

You might want to check with your dealer, or Toshiba service, if you are voriad about warranty.

  • So I need a T7 screw driver not a T6? Thanks for the info!

  • Yes, a T7

  • can u tell me what is the purpose of the Sim slot located at the battery compartment? after i inserted sim card, nothing happen. im just curious

  • thanks for the open-up view, I was wondering if the motherboard has a built in support to add 3G Data SIM? There is already a slot place I see it when I remove the battery, when I opened it I found soldered ends at that place? could SIM card pins be added to those soldered pins?

  • I have a N270 which I want to swap with a N280 cpu. How easy is that?
