Take an old Trashcan, or new, plastic works best and it is cheapest and drill plenty of holes in the bottom for drainage. Fill it a foot deep with garden soil and lay the potatoes on the top when the season is right. Cover them with mulch of almost any kind. Leaf, hay, stray, sawdust etc. and give them consistent moisture. As they grow, keep covering everything but the top leaves. It is best if they never dry out. Tend to them daily and you will have fantastic results. How do I know since I have never done it before? Because paying attention every day has worked with every single other thing I have ever done, or tried, in my life.
try using contractor bags or trash bags. You can roll down the sides to allow the light in and unroll them as you add soil. you can also just slice the bags open to harvest.

For those wondering why the soil level is so far down it's so that as the plants grow upward you can add more soil and there will be more potatoes form as the level rises thus getting more from the space.

If you fill the tub with soil/compost, the plants will be at the top..........Lack of sunlight not an issue..............Not rocket science !

I made a cylinder the size of a garbage can out of chicken wire lined it with straw then filled with soil. Sun gets in great. If you don't want soil leaking onto patio, etc., place the whole thing in a large black garbage bag and roll it down. Cheap and easy.
Straw is amazing...holds moisture really well.
