It makes perfect sense that they do some of the songs in Spanish. These girls are after all supposed to be Puerto Rican.

I don't think they should have changed what is already a very popular song in broadway and film history. It's one thing to do that for hispanic countries, but for the American version it just takes away the nostalgia of seeing West Side Story for me, since it's what i grew up with.

@cynicsfaith it's amazing! although Maria should have the C6 (it's the last note in the quintet version of Tonight with Tony, the Sharks, the Jets, and Anita), it's surprising that they put it in this song. it's cute haha and impressive.... and ear piercing if you do it too close to someones ear :/

Not quite sure how I feel about it though. I'm not fluent in spainish, and I think if I saw this song in spainish in a preformance I would be slightly dissapointed. Just because I love the version in the movie so much.

I do love the voices though.

@EmanuelBoricua Most of the critics do not seem to be opposed to diversity in general. They are opposed to the diversity of language in this production. Although I do not speak Spanish, I would understand what is happening in this number. However, I have listened to the Broadway cast album over and over and I have seen the play and movie. Someone who speaks only English and is not familiar with the show might have a problem.

@skullyj2002 Eh, that would be little over the top----like having a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in ancient Hebrew. I think the point of translating the lyrics into Spanish was to highlight the difference between the Latino community and the Anglo majority. Remember that they're literally the Montagues and Capulets!

It's closer to translating the Russian songs into Russian for Fiddler on the Roof.
