This command works to shut down the screen: ctrl+shift+eject

Or ctrl + alt + cmd + eject to shut your mac down :-)
Yup, good shortcuts.
Another way to put it to sleep is by pressing and holding the play button on apple remote.

I think I remember reading that in either the manual or some Apple tech doc, but since I never use the remote on my MacBook I completely forgot about this one. Good catch.

The tech note I linked to states this should work in any version of Mac OS X and even Mac OS 9.
