Lance Cpl. Owen Curry had a choice when he enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps right out of West Orange High School. But his mom, Pattie Filan-Curry, had no choice but to become a military mom. In the seven months that Curry, 19, has been deployed in Helmand Province in Afghanistan, his family has been on its own kind of deployment -- the tense fear of the phone, the endless stream of care packages, the hyper-awareness of Afghan politics. There were dark moments of fear, but there were also countless moments of unsolicited kindness -- strangers who saw Filan-Curry's Marine sweatshirt, or the bumper stickers on her car. It was long before dawn when Curry flew into Newark Airport before 6 a.m. on a cold Saturday morning, but some 30 relatives of this close-knit family were there with signs to welcome him home. You are not alone, the Corps are family. God bless your Marine.
