(July 2009) Young Society Drum Group of Lumbee Pembroke Boys & Girls Club honored the Tribal Chairman and Tribal Council with a traditional giveaway at the AISES Powwow on Saturday, July 4, 2009 during the 2009 Lumbee Homecoming activities. Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins(pictured left in red shirt), was honored with an Eagle Feather and the Tribal Council was honored with special pencil boxes and tobacco ties presented by the drum group of Pembroke Boys & Girls Club, Young Society. The giveaway gives the drum group an opportunity to honor the people in the Tribe who have helped them along the way, said John Locklear, a Cultural coordinator for the Pembroke Boys & Girls Club.

Young Society(below) was organized in 2008, and consists of both boys and girls ranging in age from 6-year-olds to 17-year-olds. The group is lead by a head singer who is charged with the responsibility of order and is elected by the members within the group. Currently Chris Locklear, a 14-year-old who has been a member of the Pembroke Boys & Girls Club for five years, is serving in this position. Its a heavy load but I enjoy guiding them, it makes me feel good because I can take care of them and make sure they stay out of trouble, said Chris.
hrough the use of the drum, the group Young Society(right) is taught to understand the value of respect in regard to elders, culture and oneself. A lot of people dont know what a powwow is all about and I feel like the giveaway offers me the chance to show the importance of what it really is, said Chris. Young Society also incorporates the drum in Boys Council for the children to gather around and openly share their thoughts. The Lumbee Boys & Girls Club is a good place because it teaches responsibility and keeps you out of trouble, said Chris.
