Without wishing to sound repetative i am constantly amazed how many songs Re must have in her head. I mean 40+ years singing Church, Blues, Jazz, Standards, Rock, Opera, Soul and i've never once seen her use an auto-cue. Can you imagine how much music that is to retain?
Amazing.

Once again, Aretha takes a simple classical or operatic song, infuses some soul and elevates it into something that the original composer would be immensely proud of.

I love how the pianist and Ms. Aretha snuck 'Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring" in to this peice. WOW, this is amazing. I keep listing to this again and again. Her singing is so powerful and beautiful!

Ever since 'Retha made history by stepping in for Pavarotti to sing "Nessun Dorma", I realize that she has a special gift for breathing new life into operatic arias and art songs like this. She needs to do this more often, because a lot of music purists get stuck on the way a song "should" be sung and miss out on great interpretations like this. Only the great Aretha can take an aria/art song and make it as fresh as the day it was written.

I LOVE TO SINGA

Trivia: Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes was considered by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as their special song. Aretha Franklin has revived this old tune in her usual magnificent way and the musical bridge by the pianist - Bach's Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring - is a brilliant touch. A lovely post!

Aretha never fails to pull something out of the shadows of music and bring songs to the public that some of us may have never heard ever in life. Its because of her that I even pay any attention to opera and can now see the beauty in it. What other artist has done that? People really forget why Aretha is on the level she is on and why so many revere her the way they do. This is a fine example of her master interpretive skills.

The original tune of this song is somewhat distorted in this lady's singing!!!

The song is called "Drink to me only with thine eyes. "
The lyrics are from Ben Jonson's 1616 poem "To Celia." The tune is of unknown origin, composed some time after 1770, But NOT by Bach.

Thanks but i knew it.
Fom 1.38 until 1.58, the pianist and Aretha plays "Cantate BWV 147/Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben/Jesu bleibet meine Freude" about BACH.
