The 13 year cicada, Brood XIX, is expected to appear in record numbers Spring 2011. In early May, they began to emerge from the ground at my home near Nashville. Expected to hang around for a month or so, they will most certainly be a nuisance for all outdoor activities. Just based on this footage of their initial emergence from a 13 year hibernation, I believe the predictions of overwhelming numbers of these insects are going to be true. During the mating process, their loud buzzing and droning noises will be quite annoying, in particular due to the large masses expected.

Cicadas are not harmful to humans. After the mating process, female cicidas can cause damage to young trees and plants as they cut the branches and lay eggs. These eggs will eventually fall to the ground, and the 13 year (or 17 year cycle in other regions) starts over again.

CAMERA: Sony HDR-CX560V; recorded at 60p, 28 mbps, 1920 x 1080 HD.
EDITING: Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10; converted to Sony MP4, 30p, 16 mbps.

  • UPDATE JUNE 2, 2011: I am beginning to see signs of a massive demise. Noticing dozens of "expired" cicadas in the driveway and underneath trees where the eggs are likely being deposited. While it seems that the noise level has diminished since Memorial Day, it is still intense. Please check out my second cicada upload if you haven't already.

  • UPDATE: May 22, 2011 - The nymphs stopped emerging from the ground only a few days ago. In the meantime, the noise level is double what it was last week; I might post some footage. Also, the mating process is in full swing. I actually now have some closeup footage of these things in the mating process. They are "getting their freak on" (LOL) on the sides of trees, in flower beds, etc. They have no shame.

  • I forget what time of year, but if you dig just below the surface in dark topsoil areas you can find their grubbs. Caught many alligator gar with them as a kid.

  • I used to take cicadas by the wings and pull them apart which would separate the bodies into halves.
