You adapt to the gig. This is a pop rock gig. If he played a chops -happy solo, only 3 people in the audience would get it , and they would be drummers. You play like this and you get a standing 'O'. Steve is a pro, and a friend. He knows what he is doing.
@DCussen Neil probably made him play this sort of solo vs the type solo Steve would have played at berklee...when you're a hired gun you do what's appropriate for the gig and in an 80's arena rock days you have to play for everyone all the way back to the nosebleed seats...you can't do that showing off your snare drum technique
Classic stupid 80's drum solo. He's WAY better than this, this was totally bland. All these drum solos from 80's supergroups had all kinds of double bass with extended cymbal crashing. A lot of show, not much substance. I couldn't stand his snare sound. But he was way more talented than most arena-rock drummers at the time.
@Kelavmeister I agree, Steve smith was amazing then, but his playing has progressed and now hes just frickin incredible. I can safely say hes one of the best players in the world

@DCussen Oh bah humbug. There's something about the over-the-top 80's that I just can't help but love. And this is coming from a jazz-nerd
