I beg to differ with ChicoB5. Terraced dynamics has absolutely nothing to do with parties and everything to do with the description of how the volume changes suddenly rather than gradually. They were designed to compliment those of a pipe organ. This particular piece was composed by Gabrieli solely for performance in the San Marco Cathedral. The intent was to have two ensembles on opposite sides of the church to exploit the uniqe layout and acoustics of the building.

The piece is known as Terrace music, as it was usually played on terraces for parties, etc. It uses only two dynamics- soft and loud, hence the name. This was largely because of the time period, and the sonata form was pretty free when it was written. Hopefully you can translate english.
