"Sacramento Movie Houses" is an affectionate illustrated look at the origins of the motion picture theatre in Sacramento during the first quarter of the 20th century. The transition from live performers to ‘canned’ actors traces the medium’s first appearances in former livery stables and cramped nickelodeons to picture palaces that combined the best of live and filmed entertainment. The parallel between the growth of Sacramento’s downtown business district and the construction of bigger and more ornate movie venues, including the Fox-Senator and Alhambra, is shown with original photos and memorabilia from the collection of the Sacramento Room of the Sacramento Public Library. A gallery of motion picture posters that were actually used in Sacramento theatres concludes this peek at movie-going during the silent years of cinema.
