United Nations, Geneva, August 2009 - The United Nations Department of Public Information has organized the first annual Global Model United Nations Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, from 5 - 7 August 2009. The conference was a simulation of General Assembly plenary sessions and the Assemblys Main Committees. The theme of the 2009 conference was The Millennium Development Goals: Lifting the Bottom Billion out of Poverty.
More than 1,000 university-level students, ages 18 to 24 were invited from Member States where Model United Nations programmes are currently organized. The students were selected through a fair and competitive selection process.
