Tibetans Protest Outside Chicago Embassy

CHEN:
Tibetans are protesting outside Chinese Consulates worlwide. This follows the Chinese regime's crackdown on their countrymen in Lhasa. Our reporter was at the Chicago Embassy.

STORY:
Tibetans living in the United States are supporting demonstrations in Lhasa. Last Friday they held a candlelight vigil and protest in front of the CCP consulate in the U.S. city of Chicago. They condemned the Chinese Communist Party for its suppression in Tibet.

The Free Tibet Student organization and Chicago's Tibet Federation are calling on the United States for support.

[Tenzin Youdon, President, Free Tibet Chicago]:
"We only had a very short time to prepare for this activity. Along with other student organizations of Free Tibet, we have issued a joint statement. We will tell them to never give up, we are here to support you and you will not be forgotten."

The activists want people to know what's really going on in Tibet.

[Tenzin Youdon, President, Free Tibet Chicago]:
"Generally speaking, the CCP always believes if they block the information flow, no one will know what has happened."

With the Olympics just a few months away, the Tibetan community believes now is the best time for them to have their voices heard.

[Kecsang Draggo, Chicago Federation of Tibet]:
"Our time comes. The Tibet people have never had a chance to protest as we did today. As soon as they shout 'Tibet,' they will be arrested. The Beijing Olympics is our best protest opportunity."

Protesters say they haven't called their families in Tibet yet, as they believe the phones are cut off.
