In Nyeri County, a group of enterprising grandmothers are likely to challenge everything you believe about women in their seventies. The women have perfecting their skills in crushing stones and passing them on to construction companies. They say it is the only economic activity they can engage in. And as Rose Wangui reports, they have also learnt to live with the health consequences of their grueling trade.

  • These mothers work hard, just like many mothers in Kenya, trying to earn an honest living, with the hope that their children will have a break from the vicious cycle and do less physically demanding jobs. I salute these women and many other Kenyan women who happen to be our mothers. I only hope that somebody can assist them access the ESP funds to help them upgrade, say acquire a stone crushing machine.

  • I VALUE THIS WOMEN 100% MORE THAN WOMEN WHO PROSTITUTE THEIR BODIES SO AS TO HAVE A GOOD LIFE.

  • and where are these children who they have brought up doing this job they should be in turn taking care of their mothers. Nkt!

  • Strength of a woman!

  • @siasabora I am sure they would opt for the later! Too many politics and corruption involved in such an initiative that it would never take off and if it, did they would rob these women blind!! Kenya oh poor Kenya!! :(

  • What a sad crying shame to see mothers in Kenya, LITERARY toiling in the STONE-AGE!

  • a simplified mech. stone-crusher could load One lorry a Day. 30 lorries a Month...ask engineering dept at Kenya Polytechnic, KTTTC or JKUAT to take up that challenge.....or forever shut down!

  • wira ni wira...............mothers rule

  • its exposures like these that make me think the current politicians and their families should not exist in kenya.tax thieves---------------
