Alan Hartney is the Coffee Ambassador for Starbucks in the UK and Ireland. Alans role is quite simply the envy of coffee-lovers: to drink it, talk about it, find foods that match it, and travel the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland talking to people about it.

Is "flat white" what Starbucks is calling a normal Cappucino? The drink which everyone else makes, but which is not filled with sugar, cream, spices and fat?

The flat white is usually served in a tulip cup with a single espresso base, milk and a thin layer of silky froth on top. It makes for a great canvas for cafe art, usually a heart. Im thinking it came around from the Australian instant coffee scene. We must have wanted a white coffee without all that fancy stuff :)
