You're right about the date, but four-wheeled trucks have been a feature of rolling stock on American railroads since the 1850's; the date is more easily revealed by the locomotives, which are wood-burners equipped with balloon stacks, a feature that had disappeared from most mainline railroads by the mid-1890s. The second locomotive is also equipped with radial valve gear, which was first ordered by the Southern Pacific in 1883.
Very nice! Didn´t know that these trains already were 11 cars long in that time. But I also think that it was earlier than 1897, because all cars have 4 wheel trucks. So it could easily be around 1885 as well. Just my guess.
