Sea Shepherd Sets Sail for Antarctica

Anti-whaling activists are making their way to the Southern Ocean to intercept a Japanese whaling fleet. Their ship is named the Steve Irwin, in honor of the late Australian conservation activist.

The Irwin family was at the dock to bid farewell to the crew. Steve's children, Bindi and Robert, along with their mother Terri, had a chance to climb up to the vessel and check out the crew helicopter on board.

Members of the Irwin family say they want to join the crew when theyre old enough.

[Bindi Irwin, Steve Irwin's Daughter]:
"I do, I think I am counting down the days and months till I am sixteen.

Terri Irwin says her late husband, Steve, was always thinking about how to support the anti-whaling activist group Sea Shepherd.

[Terri Irwin, Steve Irwin's Wife]:
"For us to be able to lend that support and for Paul to honor our family by naming it Steve Irwin is just heartfelt, it is wonderful."

[Robert Irwin, Steve Irwin's Son]:
"That is really bad actually, I think it is really bad because it is almost like theyre trying to kill people because they are killing the whales. It is really bad.

The standoff in the high seas between the Japanese whaling fleet and the Sea Shepherd activists has escalated into crisis levels during the past years.

Japan claims its fleet hunts whales for scientific purposes.
