Back in the mid 90s, I wrote and recorded this song on a basic 4 track tape recorder and sent a tape of it as a joke to my sister, Liz Donovan, who worked at that time at The Miami Herald. The song satirically bemoans the slow demise of the newspaper industry.
Sadly, Liz died a few years ago, but some time later, a copy of the tape was found and someone listened to it and thought "what the hell?"
Dave Barry then wrote a short piece about it in his online column and had a link to an audio file of the song on my website, which was soon inundated with traffic. Comments on his blog ranged from curiosity to derision. It was a very rough recording, and I likely was drunk when I did it.....
For whatever reason, I decided to re-record the song now, hopefully a bit better than before, with new and updated commentary in its' middle section. The newspaper industry is in even worse shape than it was in the mid 90s, and we will all be poorer when the time comes that print journalism finally dies.
Buy a newspaper, at least once in awhile, and let's keep them alive at least for now.
