For thousands of years, migrating fish have made the same journey up Floridas Apalachicola River to their historic spawning and feeding grounds in the Flint and Chattahoochee rivers. But for the last 50 years, the Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam at the Georgia border has blocked this ancient route. Recently, The Nature Conservancy and its partners found a simple solution to help navigate spawning fish through the structure a solution that is having a regional impact on freshwater conservation.

Before 2005, the locks at Lake Seminole were used infrequently because ship passages had become rare. Now, during spawning season each spring, the locks to the Apalachicola River, which flows from the lake some 100 miles south to the Gulf of Mexico, are opened twice each day. The locks are opened nearly identical in manner to the way they were operated for the passage of ships, except that pumps are now used to create a current that attracts fish into the lock. --Jay Harrod, Nature Conservancy
