Sound Installation: Argus Project, (First Walk)

This is another video of a presentation of the Argus Project, an environmental sound installation by Jonathon Kirk and Lee Weisert. This video was taken at an Oct. 4, 2008 presentation at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. Four speakers surround the pond emitting processed source sound coming from two underwater hydrophones (microphones) below the pond's surface. Two lasers from across either end of the pond track disturbances on the water's surface. The laser disturbances are converted into data and then used to further process the sound. The source sounds from the pond include, water currents, insects, frogs, turtles, surface disturbances and an occasional fish bumping into the microphones. The sound installation is only operational at night so that the solar cells are able to pick up the laser beam from a far distance. The sound processing was executed in the Max/MSP programming environment.
