The 'Crossbeats' were an early CCM band from Liverpool UK, and this video shows part of their tour of the USA in 1970 (see www.crossbeats.co.uk/y70tour.htm). The video is of an open-air concert given probably in the grounds of David's United Church of Christ in Kettering, Ohio on 24 July 1970. The actual spot seems likely to be on the grounds of the 'new' extension (at the side of the church), as gravestones can be seen in some shots, as well as the water tower (now 2) to the East behind what is now Sunray Road.

The group stayed with people from Christ United Methodist who had been kind enough to put us up, and played in that church on the Sunday morning (no video). The bus can be seen leaving from that Christ United's car park on Shroyer. The open air concert in this video is likely to have been an inter-church event.

The (silent) cine film has been padded out with other images so that music could be added and synchronised as far as possible (in some cases the visuals are of a different song). Unfortunately the cine film was rather dark in parts, and was difficult to 'lift' to give a reasonable picture. The song being played is 'I do believe' (www.crossbeats.co.uk/cb11.htm), and the line-up for this was: Tony Mathias, Eddie Boyes, John Boyes, Sam Pennington and Joe Roberts.

  • Many thanks Riverscape2. I've amended the description accordingly. I assume the passing cars in the background (seen at one point) must be on Groby Drive?

  • Brilliant Video they were a Great Group.

    A Merseybeat Special Christian Group.

  • Those who believe they were created by a being who wants worshiped by what it made out of itself, has to be lost. . If that were true it would be a solid case of self worship. I hope you understand.

  • I'm an Oakwood resident and know well of the home on Beverly Place. The bridge in Cincinnati is now known as the Purple People Bridge (pedestrian only, google for info).

  • Performance location, David's United Church of Christ, 100 block of W. David Rd. (before large addition added to E side of original church). Note the gravestones in the vid of the adjacent David Cemetary. Water Tower (2 there now) directly east, other side of Far Hills Ave. Isaac Prugh Way, Lincon Park, the Fraze, was a wooded, undeveloped area in 1970. Used Google and Bing Maps for confirmation. Possibly an interchurch function, as the bus does leave from Christ United on Shroyer.
