I set up camp at this free California campground Sept 8, 2010. It was pretty easy to find as the entrance road (Herring Creek Road) is right off of Highway 108 and leads right to the campground. The last couple of miles are unpaved, rocky and bumpy. I stayed two nights there and would have stayed longer but my first night there a dozen or so range cattle wandered in and seemed inclined to feed on some young pine trees right outside my tent. Their cowbells kept me awake for hours.
No water, vault toilet.
@beagfeileacan That's pretty awesome. Maybe I'll do that too one of these days. I have my forest map and GPS, now all I need is a new car. haha

I used to camp there every year with my parents, when I lived in California! :) God I miss that place. It was so beautiful. If you walk up the road past where they stop allowing vehicles through, you eventually run into the lake. Another road in the campground will take you around Hammill Canyon road, and to two overlooks nicknamed "The Gargoyles", and "Pinecrest Overlook". The scenery is AMAZING, I've been up and down it by ATV more times than I can count.

@heyjkuhl Yeah, I didn't see any bears... only their claw marks on the trees. I think the cows scared them all off.

Bears, oh my! We had quite a few bear attacks in Montana this year. But it sounds like you had to be more wary of cows on your camping trip!
