iLCP Voices Behind the Camera with Michele Westmorland

Michele Westmorland (a member of the iLCP) is from Seattle and specializes in capturing travel and cultural images from around the world. She is also known for her underwater photography. Her photographs have been published in many recognized national and international publications such as National Geographic Traveler and Adventure magazines, Outside and many more. She has won several awards for her imagery. Michele lectures for numerous organizations and is a photo pro to exotic locations. Her most passionate area of travel is Papua New Guinea. Her stock is represented by Getty, Corbis, and Fotostock. She is a Fellow Member of The Explorers Club.

Michele Westmorland and Karen Huntt recently returned from a two month long expedition to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands where they realized their project vision, Headhunt Revisited, Charting Cultural Change in Melanesia. The idea was born some 12 years ago when Michele was given a copy of Caroline Mytinger's book New Guinea Headhunt. Mytinger traveled to Melanesia in 1926 to paint portraits of the people before the intrusion of the Western world changed the indigenous peoples' way of life forever. Michele and Karen went to the area to document the people as they live today and to portray the changes that have occurred in the past 75 years.
