This is an advanced variation of squatting that is great for athletic development. The athlete starts by standing up as fast as possible from a position where the bar is resting completely on the pins. This is great for developing starting strength, or the ability to overcome inertia. Next, a partner quickly adds a supra-maximal load to the bar such that the weight on the bar exceeds the athlete's max by 10-50%. The athlete then does 2-5 quarter squats with the supra-maximal load, emphasizing a fast turn-around at the bottom position and an explosive finish. This is great for developing eccentric strength and power. Finally, the athlete lowers the bar as slowly as possible back to the pins. This is great for developing eccentric strength.
