An elegant "valse lente" by Robert Gaden and his dance orchestra recorded for Electrola on november 19th, 1935.
Robert Gaden (1893-1985) was reknowed for his elegant style and the polished sound of his orchestra, as is illustrated by this recording.

The theme of this video is the city of Berlin, showing the bustling metropolis as it once was and never will be again... An uptempo rhythm would have fitted the images equally well (and may do so in the future), yet this slow waltz give them a peaceful quality.

In the video you will see Berlin during the daytime and at night : Unter den Linden, Friedrichstrasse, Berlin Dom and Stadtschloss (from the air), Potsdamer Platz, Kurfürstendamm, Gendarmenmarkt, the Scala music hall and many others...

About the record :

Electrola EG3511 - mx.ORA887

Sound equipment used : Ortofon Om78 cartridge and stylus
Turntable : Stanton T.90
TerraTec 78RPM Phono Pre-amp

Record transferred without intervention/cleaning effects.
B-side to "Ich spür in mir/ Mazurka".

After processing, this video will also be offered in HD.
However whether this function works will depend on your Internet connection and the abilities of your computer (your screen may freeze).
After uploading it will take some time for the image to be fully processed (and become sharp)

  • At 2;16 one of the neon lights was flashing "Moslem Problem." Was that a show playing at the time?

  • It is a publicity from 1920s Berlin. "Problem" was a Berlin cigarette maker. "Moslem" was one of their brands.. It makes for a strange combination... Yet it is the truth...

  • Wonderful time material, thank you ever so much, Leotaurus. Watching and listening, one thinks of what happened to Berlin not so many years later.

God in Heaven, why did that have to be?
