When you send unused computers to be recycled overseas, there is no guarantee young children won't be hired or volunteer to rip apart the machines to extract the precious minerals from the circuit boards. This is why I'm really interested in what eCycle is doing.
They work with homeless shelters and prisons to ensure that recycled computers are handled in the United States by adults. Some higher end computers (Pentium 4 and above) are refurbished and given to needy families and the homeless. This is important because it allows them to get online (not just for recreation but also for job searches and to hear back on job offers via email and even online voicemail).
