Derby County in the Community are at the forefront of a Change for Life programme aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle with children in over 100 schools in Derbyshire. Developed to reflect the Physically Active Children Everywhere project in Erewash (PACE) and the FIVE60 programmes in Erewash and Bolsover respectively, our coaches are working with children in and out of the classroom to help to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Over a six week period the children work with our coaches undertaking a variety of activities including lunch-time clubs and after-school sessions as well as classroom activities to go alongside physical activity lessons during curriculum time.
The physical activity lessons focus on getting the children active in a variety of ways, while learning about basic physiological processes during exercise. Following these lessons the children go back into the classroom to take part in practical activities aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle. We educate each group about the functions of vitamins and minerals, the benefits of a balanced diet including fruit and vegetables and concluding in the final week by preparing snacks using basic food hygiene and preparations skills.
The programme is being funded by Amber Valley and Erewash Borough Councils along with the NHS Primary Care Trust.
Venue: Kilburn Infant School, Derbyshire
