Monday, September 13, 2010, Livonia, Michigan: A123 Systems, a leading domestic manufacturer of advanced lithium ion batteries and systems for electric drive-train vehicles, opened the largest lithium ion automotive battery facility in the United States.

The state-of-the-art plant in Livonia, Michigan will expand A123's manufacturing capabilities and contributes to the company's plan to expand global final cell assembly capacity to more than 760MW hours annually by the end of 2011.




As the future of the auto industry is focused on the electrification of vehicles, A123 Systems is poised to take a leadership role in providing the enabling technology to power the "transportation revolution."

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm announced that 16 Michigan companies that have are now in the battery development - manufacturing business will employee over 63,000 people in the next decade.

DOE/ MEDC/State Incentives

The opening of the Livonia factory comes just over one year after A123 Systems received a $249 million grant from the U.S. DOE as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to help the company execute its aggressive strategy to ramp up its U.S. manufacturing capabilities to meet increasing, market-driven demand for its breakthrough technologies.

A123 Systems, which also collaborated with the MEDC, received $238 million in state incentives from Michigan as part of its 21st Century Jobs Fund to help finance these manufacturing facilities, which will also include a coating plant in Romulus, Mich. set to open in 2011




New Jobs in Michigan / State Strives to Become Auto Battery Capital of the World

A123 Systems has hired more than 250 skilled workers at its Livonia facility thus far, bringing its total workforce in Michigan to more than 300 employees, and plans to create thousands more jobs in Michigan over the next several years. The company plans to continue its expansion to help the U.S. emerge as a global leader in the production of lithium ion batteries.

The new 291,000 square-foot facility in Livonia will focus on manufacturing prismatic cells and systems, and is designed to enable the complete production process, including research and development, manufacturing of high-value components, cell fabrication, module fabrication and the final assembly of complete battery packs for vehicle integration.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu was also in attendance and toured the plant. But the big surprise was during the press conference was when US president Barack Obama called in to stress the importance of the developing new green and clean transportation technologies.

  • GM and Ford are great companies. Electric Automobile Manufacturing necessity needs are right now in very high demand. However there are over 5 Million Used Gasoline Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles in America right now that's for sale to a 15 Million young High School senior/graduate population.
