    Peter Gabriel's third solo album is still his masterpiece. Phil Collins' drumming here is ferocious as he was coming out of the divorce from his first wife and the drumming Phil did in 1979/80 (on Peter's Melt, Genesis' Duke and his solo debut Face Value) saw a man channel his pain into some of the greatest drumming ever captured onto tape. Then Phil would use the engineer Peter had on this album Hugh Padgham on his first solo album shortly thereafter.

    Melt is one of the greatest of rarities: a perfect concept album. It's so seamless you don't even notice the central themes and characters - the outsider, the abnormal, the dysfunctional, the desperate, etc.
