Southern Pacific 4449 In La Crosse WI

Southern Pacific's Famed Daylight GS-4 4449 Steam Locomotive went through La Crosse today onward to Michigan for Trainfest. This is her first cross country trip in 30 years. Also in the consist was Amtrak Genesis 51, some loaned Milwaukee Road Hiawatha cars a Missouri Kansas Texas car and a New York Central car. I heavily edited the video where needed so thats why it may seem jumpy at times.

@Cutiepie53065 - Three reasons for the Amtrak engine - #1: To provide HEP (Head End Power) for the coaches (which is lighting, heat and A/C), #2: To help 4449 up steep grades and provide some braking assistance going downhill and Lastly, the trip is running as an "Amtrak Special" - and these steam specials are now required to have a diesel (except Union Pacific).

no the reason is because 4449 doesnt have any of the modern trackside capablities. such as ctc the amtrak loco is there for safety not help.

|It does not help the #4449. It is there for head end power purposes.(HVAC, lights, etc.)

@deathstarmygnr Nope, It is because the Daylight is operating under Amtrak and to verify that it is an Amtrak train, they have the Genesis, since it IS an Amtrak engine.

I asked the conductor when I rode on it to Winona.

your right sure stupidity indeed oh well he will stop when he see's us thay say as they become the next bugsplat on the front of the engine OUCH LOL ( sorry for laughing") theres nothing funney about seeing a train fatality but hell people just are stupid sometimes i have seen all sorts while railfanning even ones getting hit by trains

hmm he must have stoped alot because those were not the same private cars that were on there when I passed him in Havre Montana I was pissed at that damn dispacher but the conducter on the Amtrak told me if 4449 had come on into town Amtrak would have been delayed and the passengers would have scattered to go see it oh well God help makeing the damn Amtrak late to see this wonderfull engine they acted like it wasnt importent to see DAMIT !!!!!!

hell man at least you got to see it running by you I was headed west in July to Seattle on the Amtrak Empire Builder and I kept hearing SP 4449 over on the radio and we pulled into Havre Montana I heard the BNSF dispacher say SP4449 I am holding you for Amtrak so we did our station work and left town we passed the 4449 out in a prarie sideing but he was too damn close to us passing for me to get a shot oh well the damn dispacher should have brought it in first so we could see it oh well
