I just took 1st place in SSP in the 2009 Arkansas State Champonship, shooting as an SSP Master. I think I know a thing or two about IDPA.
And IDPA is absolutely a game. We shoot for lowest overall time, using guns/holsters/concealment you wouldn't wear on the street.
And Ben is one of the best there is at the game. Would you guys find somewhere else to argue? Ben's video comments are hardly the place for a discussion about the spirit of the sport.

Great job Ben. Sub 60 second is a stellar performance. I think way back when IDPA was just getting started, Leatham shot the classifier in the low 60s. Incredible. People don't and most can't appreciate this feat.

What the gentlemen in the video performed was a tactical reload. What you describe is called reload with retention. They are both very similar and the difference is negligible for the everyday shooter although there are advantages to each reload in a gun fight.

Thanks... I read the whole IDPA rulebook and last month I went on my first local IDPA match and I placed 1st UN ESP, 2nd UN ESP & SSP and I placed 14th overall. Awessssooommme!!! IDPA is so much fun!!! I'm getting ready for next week's match, I can hardly wait!!!

@koolmike79 The IDPA rulebook has the classifier description

can you please edit the video with caption for the distance please? thanks Ben and you and others are inspiring me to get more serious with IDPA. Thank you and God Speed...

Question about the reloads. I was under the impression that it was a Tac reload not a reload with retention.

On the last drill, doing a proper tac reload and stowing mag while booking to next position seems to be faster them RWR, THEN moving to the 15

lol, and people were laughing at me for smoky gun powers!!
Great video!

Great run there! I just shot my first Classifier with my Ruger SR40 (they class me in ESP...sidebar, is that about right?)...missed moving up from Novice by 3.88 with a score of 193.88 overall....my long distance stage was horrible and with my back issues I don't expect to be anywhere near your speed but it's a good time and I hope to improve!

Very fast!!!
Question on the Tac reload... I noticed you just pocketed the old mag then inserted the new one. Is this okay? I thought you needed to get a new mag, swap em, then pocket the old one. Just curious, cuz your way is much faster.

@tdo79
My technique is called a "Reload with retention". As far as IDPA rules are concerned, you are good to go. You just need to retain the old mag below your beltline before you fire the next shot.

@Elbeno007
It seems faster that "tactical", so I think I am going to switch to this when doing the classifier.
Another question while I have ya...
Is there a rule to how far you can come out on the barricade and barrel? Do they care how far down you are at the barrel, or is touching your knee enough. The rules don't really specify.

@tdo79
For "Low Cover" positions, you need to have a knee down and keep your lower body behind cover.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This guy would be disqualified. It is my understanding that the gun needs to be concealed in the classifier.

Your understanding is not correct.
From the rulebook, page 13 :
CoF 13. Use concealment for scenario stages when
appropriate.
obviously, the classifier is not a "scenario" stage, hence it does not require use of concealment.
