Movie of a pod of Manatees in the beach water on Siesta Key mating. Our site at www.sunsetroyale.com publishes information on our beach. We counted 20 manatees in total and were told there was only one female.

  • Manatees comprise three of the four living species in the order Sirenia. The 4th is the Eastern Hemisphere's dugong. The Sirenia are thought to have evolved from four-legged land mammals over 60 million years ago, with the closest living relatives being the Proboscidea (elephants) and Hyracoidea (hyraxes).

  • Manatees can live in the ocean ( salt water ) or in rivers (fresh water)

  • You are correct and they typically live in fresh or brackish water. I must also add that it blows my mind that this has been viewed over 3,500 times on YouTube. I am feeling bad for my fellow seniors who are not tuned into the digital age, truly incredible!

  • They were mating and the manatees were right on Siesta Key Public beach. There were about 19 males and one female. I believe this is called a pod and I assume the female came into the shore to attempt to have the males call it a day. Mote Marine came out and taped off the area.

  • Oh, gotcha! What women have to do to get away from men, sometimes....... ;-)

  • Life's a beach!
