A large portion of the Lebanese Maronite Mass is in Syriac (Western Aramaic). These days much more Arabic is being included since its the lingua franca of the region, otherwise our national, spiritual and ethnic language is Syriac. The official name of the Maronite Church is "Itho Suryaytho Morounaytho d'Antokia" or the Syriac Maronite Church of Antioch. All the names of villages and cities in Lebanon are in Syriac, about 60% of the Lebanese language is Syriac. Its very much alive!
Western Syriac is hard to understand if you speak Eastern Syriac. I just noticed this has the same music as when the Greek Orthodox say in mass "Through the intercession of the Theotokos, O saviour save us." In Arabic "bshafa3at walidat al-ilah, ya mukhalis khalisna"
No, I'm not Syriac, nor Lebanese, I'm just a Georgian who loves the Syriac and ancient Christian cultures.
Do you have Maronite messes in Aramaic? or are most of them in Arabic? or in English maybe?
And can you tell me please what role does this language play in the identity of Lebanese Maronite Christians? Do you think of Syriac as the language of your ancestors?
