This is an absolutely great scene, but what I've wondered is how they don't notice the wheelchair. And how is the apartment structured anyway. He tells them to come up suggesting that the entrance is on the first floor, but they come in on the second. Besides, how does Jerome survive without an elevator. He lives only on the first floor?

I think this section of the film symbolizes Eugene's struggle to "climb" to the top of the gene pool, and society.
