Sonny Rollins knows a great percussionist when he hears one. That's why he hired Kimati. Check out Sonny's new CD, "Sonny, Please," which features Kimiati's incredible percussion.
Musical Combosation, Not Surprising from these two Kings. Descending from King Nana Yao Opare Dinizulu, Kimati is himself true royalty and Rollins has chosen him as befitting and top-shelf matching bandmate. Like Kimati's playing with Steve Turre, Here with Rollins, We always Get Lifted to the Beat from the presnse of Divine Lineages. Ashe'
Sonny surrounds himself with THE VERY BEST musicians. I saw him perform in Scottsdale with Clifton Anderson (trombone), Bobby Broom (guitar), Victor Lewis (drums), the wonderful Bob Cranshaw - of course (bass), and Kimati Dinizulu playing African percussion of every imaginable kind. Kimati was astonishing and captivated the entire audience with his amazing solos.
I like Rollins because of his musicallity. Rollins never over does it like Coltrane tended to and he makes very good use of the musicians around him as well. This Dinizulu guy is a perfect example of how Rollins uses musicians to accent a piece and how easily he sets up a musical intimacy with them. He's just a great Jazz artiste. I hope he keeps it up.
Looking and sounding great after all these year. All praises Mr. Sonny Rollins.
