It's all artificial, eh? American conventional oil production peaked around 1970 due to natural resource depletion and will continue to decline. That is the big reason why we are facing the energy issues of today. Also, there were research initiatives for algal biodiesel and energy efficiency/conservation until they were scrapped when we forgot about the crises of the 70's.
Recommendation: do your own research on the history of offshore drilling, ANWR and oil shales.
