The writers decided to disguise Leeves' pregnancy by giving Daphne a "weight" problem. You might notice that many of the episodes during the middle of season eight feature Niles giving Daphne sweets and her being obsessed with eating. After her "weight" gets really heavy, Martin and Frasier start to make comments and she leaves to go to a "fat spa" and returns back to normal (Ep. Daphne Returns). During that time, Leeves gave birth to a 9 lb 12 oz. girl.
