This video journals my hiking trip up the mountain Volcán Barú, the highest point in the country of Panama. I climbed it on September 3, 2011. We left at 5:00 am and reached the top about 6.5 hours later. The entire trip took 12.5 hours. The Volcán Barú is the tallest mountain in Panama and is 3,474 meters (11,398 ft) high. We started our trek at about 1,900 meters. Barú come from an indigenous word meaning "mountain of fire". The volcano has not erupted since the mid 1500s. There are craters near the summit leftover from previous eruptions.

  • Thanks for sharing your climb. Now I have a very good idea of what to look forward to in a couple of years.

What brings you to Panama? There are 2 routes to use to climb Baru. You can leave from either Boquete or Volcan. The Boquete side has more of a path because 4x4 vehicles use it to reach the antenna station at the top.
