Credit Union National Association (CUNA) President/CEO Dan Mica talking about the new book Untapped: Creating Value in Underserved Markets, by John Weiser. This is an excerpt from his speech at the 2006 World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) Conference in Dublin, Ireland.
The book talks about how businesses have the opportunity to increase profits and, at the same time, make improvements in underserved communities by selling to their residents, hiring them, and purchasing from them.
While previous books have touted business opportunities in underserved markets, none have outlined the specific strategies necessary to turn this business concept into a detailed business model.
This topic is especially relevant for credit unions, as they look to serve more low-income and unbanked individuals.
The book is also the cornerstone for the National Credit Union Foundation's (NCUF) Social Impact Management Institute, which focuses on cooperative values and how they can be translated into pragmatic business strategies with low-income households and prospects. Author John Wieser also facilitates the Institutes.
