La Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de PeñarroyaConcebida con la intención de aprovechar las hullas del Valle del Guadiato para tratar las galenas argentíferas del Sur de las provincias de Ciudad Real y Badajoz, en 1881 se constituye en París la sociedad citada a la que se aportan diversas concesiones mineras en las zonas referidas. La Entidad comienza inmediatamente su actividad y decide establecer sus instalaciones industriales en los alrededores de Peñarroya, que poco antes tenía menos de 3000 habitantes
Hoy la realidad es muy distinta el cerco de Peñarroya se encuentra total mente abandonado
Y con multitud de edificios industriales en la más absoluta ruina repartidos en una superficie de varias hectáreas y un interesantísimo edificio, el de los almacenes generales: eso es lo que hoy queda de lo que fue el complejo industrial más importante del Sur de España en el primer tercio del siglo XX. Nos estamos refiriendo al estado actual de lo que fueron las instalaciones de la Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya, ubicadas en las proximidades de esta población.
