i usually use a small to medium size nymph, nothing special really. a small, (#8 or #10 hook) unweighted woolly bugger is about perfect. the trick is to cast the fly directly in front of the fish's mouth. success with fly fishing for carp is being able to see the fish and feed the fish. carp are curious and will eat just about anything, i have even caught many on dry flies...
You catch and release Carp? OMG - that is sooo against the law down here (they're a real problem pest in Oz).
Any Carp caught must be destroyed, and if buried, it must be above the high water mark in the area (so any potential eggs never make it back into the water etc).
the carp here in the colorado rockies are also an invasive species. however, they are the biggest fish we get to catch on these waters and it is common practice to let them go, one man's floor... sight fishing for carp with flies is very challenging and fun!
I hope they don't take off over there like they did over here - they decimated our Murray/Darling river system and anything that holds water (dams, billabongs etc) too...
