The annual session of China's parliament, the National People's Congress, brings together around 3,000 delegates from across the country for two weeks every year.

The NPC, as it is known, affirms rather than makes policy, but the backstage lobbying gives aspiring leaders the chance to put their stamp on policy and consolidate their influence.
