I think we had so much fun with the Puritani contest, we should try out a differnt opera. This time I choose Verdi's La Traviata, and the aria is the final cabaletta in act I, Sempre Libera. I started each one right at the introduction to the cabaletta segment. I am sure I will hear about it from the masses! But once again since we are working with video material not every soprano can be included, some sopranos such as Sills and Gruberova have videos released on commercial dvd, therefore, I am not including them. I am going to follow tradition here and use a score of 1-5 for two catagories singing/characterization. Here are the singers I have included and the dates of the performances:
June Anderson - 2000
Joan Sutherland - 1975
Daniela Dessi - 1994
Ileana Cotrubas - 1981
Stefania Bondadelli - 2004
Cecilia Gasdia - 1986
Elena Mosuc - 2001
Darina Takova - 2001
Renata Scotto - 1973
Anna Netrebko - 2003
Mary Dunleavy - 2001
Nelly Miricioiu - 1993
Mariella Devia - 1999
Dimitra Theodossiou - 2000

  • Beautiful performance in perfect command of the voice, pathos, energy, and musicality. Far, far better than many other Violettas such as Nebretko and Dessay (who is no Violetta!!!) Boring? Who said that?! Mosuc deserves to sing at the MET asap! She'll take it by storm!

  • What a terrific artist...I hope she sings here in New York soon.

  • A competition! Rats! I cannot score this performance. Ms Mosuc sings well, but the camera angle makes it impossible to tell how well she acts and engages the audience.

  • Simply INCREDIBLE. A great and superb artist. Hope she can visit Buenos Aires to sing in our Colon Theatre.

  • Listen to NICULINA CARSTEA in Traviatta, and Lucia di Lamermoor...because she is one of the most magnificent Romanian coloratura sopranos.

  • how can anybody say boring after this magnificentally sung cabaleta?

she is is a wonderful singer !

  • I know she will, and I'm sure you'll be positively surprised, it will be a treat! I don't like comparisons, but a certain French skinny soprano will shy away!

  • I love Mosuc, have hear her many times, but must agree she is not Violetta. Even when I heard her in Zagreb in this role, she was no good. She's much better Gilda if we stay in Verdi, seen her twice in Areda di Verona, or Anna Bolena if we go to other composers (Vienna Konzerhouse).

  • I can agree with skitzo429 ...only one thing is to give to the protocoll: Mosucs technique and Coloraturas have been from the beginning of her career good/better than Netrebko will be in 100 years! You have to listen to her Zerbinetta and Lucia di Lammermoor¨But I agree for the Verdiroles her voice sounds a little like a mouse! She gives to much pressure.....
