Superior AC traction system of EMD's WDG-4 locos wheel slip or creep control on display here on a mountain section in India called Braganza Ghat with 1 in 37 (2.7%) gradient. 4500hp WDG-4 (GT46MAC) comes with 16-710G3B prime mover and IGBT technology similar to SD70MAC locos. It was found that if the wheels are made to slip on purpose slightly more then ground speed, maximum tractive effort is achieved. This is made possible with the aid of computer controlled wheel slip or creep control by interpolating ground speed determined by ultrasonic doppler radar and the motor RPM input from the loco controls. Twin WDG-4 locos lead a heavy coal train assisted by triple WDG-4 bankers(helpers) at the rear.

  • previously even the passenger train had stopped on this stretch of track... wat was the spray which was being sprayed onto the track ???

  • @nikhil030487 Sand.

  • Can i just say my heartfelt thanks to you Ramdev. I so love them locos that I can giggle and clap and cry like a child watching those mighty creatures on duty. I have never seen wheel slip from so up close. Also, the image of the sand releasing. It was divine. How did you discover this gradient? And how did you know you could capture slip here? Hats off to your dedication!

  • @chirantanaranya I was not sure about catching wheel slip action at this location. It just happened.

  • Thank you so much for the interesting detail. Seems like a little too much sand is blown.

    Wider than Standard Gauge?

  • Apprecite your work Ram, I have travelling in Indian railways since my childhood, but never thought even rail wheels would have slips..nice to see this..Thanks for uploading..

  • Good video. Thanks. That technology solves some real problems in the mountainous areas of India. I hope the US and India are always friends.
