Safi the dog and Wister the donkey first meet in a mountainous region of Wyoming. Their friendship develops quickly and they become fast friends. This documentary tells part of their story...

The footage comes from University of Michigan professor Barbara Smuts and is edited by amateur/student filmmaker E.J. Horstman.

  • So glad you enjoyed it! Wish I could tell you the dog species, however I didn't take the footage myself, it's from my professor, Barbara Smuts, who teaches psychology at the University of Michigan.

But thank you so much for your positive feedback!

  • they are entirely different species, and they seem to love each other so much

why can't humans learn to do that ??? :'(((

  • They look like they are having a lot of fun, and they choose to be with each other. Lovely.

  • Aww I love those two! such a sweet little video, touching.

  • I loved it, very touching.

  • @vitor1271 I agree. My student, who edited the film, used conventional language to describe our relationship. I've always referred to myself as "Safi's human"

  • @magnoliasouth Hello. Safi was a rescue, so I can't be sure, but I believe she was part G. shepherd, part Belgian shepherd (Malinois)

  • Is Barbara Smuts a vegan?

  • Safi is a mix breed dog, she was adopted when she was a youngster

  • Wonderful...

she shouldn't have written "own" Safi though... Rude...

  • Amen there! Anyone who doesn't believe it should watch "A Conversation with Koko." Granted Koko is an ape, but the proof that animals, outside of humans, have feelings is very clearly made in the show for all to see. I have no doubt about other animals. There was another one on Kangaroos where the mother cried all night when her baby was killed by wild dogs. "Expert scientists" know nothing.
