Charles Whitman atop the University of Texas tower, August 1 1966. I believe this footage to be the FIRST TIME a "breaking news" event of this type was carried live on television. KLRN (now KLRU) tv was located next door and pointed a camera out the window.

  • For history buffs like me, i love to see live footage of turning points in American. This is pretty good footage. Just wished you seen more of him instead of the clock just moving. Thanks for finding this video though.

  • He had many guns, including a sawed off shot gun. However, he used a high powered rifle for the sniping and he used the shot gun to kill the people inside the tower.

  • What is really eerie is watching the clock move.

  • Weird comment, Prince...IF the camera could see him, so could the people with guns shooting at him.

I recall this day. Everyone with a gun and in the area took positions and shot at him, and he shot back. He even killed a man that was looking through a small opening.

This is not a movie, it's real life...sorry to have disappointed you.

  • @1athletics Not only that, but the brain tumor was on his amygdala i believe, which controls rage and joy.

  • PrincalKendrick, I'm not sure you knew this or not one of the victims, Paul Sontag-Paul's grandfather was a personal friend of President & Mrs. Johnson. The First Couple, like so many americans at that time, were besides themselves with grief. I think LBJ was the 1st US President to advocate for gun control based on this event

  • This is incredible footage...I love You Tube...and wonderful people , like you bizrec , who upload and share really obscure treasure as this. Thanks.

  • He just had personal issues and a brain tumor.. He was a US MArine

  • @Aspirerx a Remington 700 sniper rifle...

  • I'M A FORMER MARINE AND HAVE LOOKED INTO THIS GUY. HE WASN'T A SHARP SHOOTER, AS I'VE READ. HE WAS AN EXPERT, ONE BADGE HIGHER THAN SHARP SHOOTER.

HE DIDN'T GIVE ENOUGH THOUGHT IN HOW TO SECURE THE DOOR OR HE'D HAVE TO HAVE BEEN STARVED TO DEATH TO END HIS INSANITY

  • what gun is he using? im mindfucked is there such a powerful sniper rifle back then?

  • I did a little digging and I discovered that some really big and prominent doctors took a real good look at his tumor and concluded that he was predisposed to getting it, and that it was going to kill him, no matter what. They said he was going to die young wether or not he went on a rampage. And they were certain that it had an effect on his behavior. They also marveled at how very thin his skull was. I, as well as the victims, see him as an evil animal that was disguised as a human. So evil.
