We think our memories are the truth but they are just facsimilies, not the events themselves. The events of our past, our memories, are profoundly colored by our beliefs about the universe and cause and effect. But our beliefs about these are profoundly colored by our beliefs about ourself and our place in the universe. Through the filter of these layered beliefs, we code and create our memories.
