In Democracy Now! students are exploring the structure and function of the US government and will question the merits of this system as a democracy. Head of School Robert Burkhard explains this multi-media piece, "My writing was just interrupted by a dozen students from the Democracy Now class conducting a sit-in in the PDC as a civil disobedience action, complete with placards, chants and songs. The background for this obstreperous event was foretold in an e-mail from Public Allies Fellow Dan Hoffman earlier today: Democracy Now is having a simulation this afternoon. We are working on different strategies citizens can use to create change in a democracy. We are focusing on service, awareness and direct action as our methods. Today we will be simulating a direct action. The students will focus on demands for change on campus and perform an action [that] may involve issues around the LRC, HPC, food service, houses. As we used to say in the sixties. RIGHT ON!"
