  • Hi, I'm 17 and I've been swimming in pools for most of my life. I can swim about 2 and 1/2 miles in an hour. I decided that since I'm never going to make a career out of swimming, I'd like to swim the channel one day when I am in my mid to late 20s in aid of any charity which deals with Emphysema, the lung disease which sadly took the life of my Granddad back in 2009. How often should I train to swim per week and how long should I train for in preparation? 1 year?

  • @Tangointheface Thanks for message. You are well placed to achieve your dream.Your swim pace is spot on & you're cause is strong enough to get you across.I would suggest the key will be making sure you get enough cold water training.swam the winter months in the pool(keep the sets varied &pace as high as I could.3 to 5 sessions@ about 5k upto 15k per session).in the spring the real work started with long swims in lakes & the sea getting upto 6hr/7hr sea swim.Hope this helps.

  • im 15...ive been swimming since i was seven. and i hope to accomplish the same, but im not sure by when !

  • @PoopedMacroon There's plenty of time. The channel will always be there. Just make sure you keep the dream alive!

  • Im planning to swim across lough neagh n ireland and have been training for six months now

Do you have any advice on the sort of miles I should doing a week in the pool etc

The swim s 9 miles or so

Ive been doing 3 mile 5 times a week for 5 or six months now

  • @MARCUSURILLIES -Hi, Great swim you are about to do.They are a good group who organise that swim! It sounds like you will eat it with the mileage youv'e described.Try & Keep the pace up in the pool swims(short pyramid sets) Try and get some open/cold water training in for the two months prior to the swim and make your longest swim be about 6 or 7 miles during one of those OW sessions. Then on the day you'll fly! - Hope that helps in some way - Good luck
