Here is a short and abridged video on the activities of Matthew Hopkins the self-styled `Witchfinder General`.
The video focusses on his life in Manningtree, Essex, and his persecution of innocents claimed by him to be witches. Evidence is partly anecdotal and from records.
Hopkins was the source of the modern craze for Halloween, and his book, `The Discovery of Witches` was later used by English settlers in America as a yardstick guide for the further continuation of persecution of innocents as exampled by the infamous `Salem Witch Trials`.
The video deals briefly with this topic, and does not include all areas of known persecution in the Manningtree district.
There is an alleged `ducking area` known as Hopping Bridge in Manningtree. I was unable on the day of my visit to access this.
Today, the religious persecution of innocents still continues, and instead of Britain being the focus of these activities it now goes on with a medieval fervour in parts of Eastern Europe, and the Third World.
Humanity has still yet a long way to go..

  • Sounds of Salem in MA. Thanks Chris.

  • @evy0579 Thanks Evy:)

  • I remember reading about this bit of scum in history when I was in highschool; what a bastard, sorry Chris but there is no other word for him; how those poor women/girls must have suffered?! As for "where" Hopkins is buried; in the interests of history, yeah ok, some might wish to visit BUT on a more social level, who cares???

*Sadly we remember how cruel some people were/are, when its the victims that deserve respect & remembering! Thanks again Chris, all the best & cheers.

  • @anzac2404 Wayne he was evil (to be polite).

It would be interesting to know where he was buried for EVP.

    Appreciate you commenting mate:)

  • how come that began with ghost hunting? ( swede asking) :D

  • @svensk1krona He started the witch craft craze in the USA which led to Halloween today being celebrated. It`s a round about connection, but it`s there:)

  • @Constantine99999, Oops, sorry I forgot about the EVP's LOL, yeah it would be interesting.....but would it be something of interest or just ranting rage, or was he just a bit Ga-Ga?!

That's the strange thing, how come he just faded away? Its not like he was poor, so did he fall out of favour with the powers of the day, or did he take a walk down a dark alley one night?! Thanks again Chris, & a safe Halloween to all. Cheers.

  • Great video!!!

  • @Constantine99999 Hey Chris its Nick

I hope you have a good Halloween,im just staying in:P

    Peace be with you.

  • Those trial were really harsh on them in those days! Today that man would be seriously out numbered by the witches of today! but my question is: How in the world did the picture of the ugly greened skinned lady with a mole on her nose become the icon of halloween?
